Trials of EndoBarrier have shown that obese patients who suffered diabetes reported a lessening of symptoms and significant weight loss. It was initially thought that the weight loss caused diabetic patients to go into remission. It was later found that most of the patients were able to lower their diabetes medication before they started losing weight.

Dr John Mason of Trafford General Hospital and his team of researchers say that the 2ft-long EndoBarrier has been developed as a non surgical alternative to gastric bypass surgery and it can reverse diabetes in a matter of weeks.

EndoBarrier is a plastic sleeve that lines the duodenum and which looks like a giant sausage skin. Food cannot be absorbed in the first 12″ of the small intestine. The trials of EndoBarrier – which is inserted via the mouth and passed into the digestive tract – have shown that in addition to beating diabetes the device can also assist with lowering blood pressure and cholesterol levels.

What a fantastic treatment this is turning out to be. Since being involved in the EndoBarrier study last year and subsequently treating our own patients at the National Obesity Surgery Centre, we have been very excited about the results. All patients have seen a reduction in their HbA1c levels, all have reduced their medication and all have lost weight.
