"The EndoBarrier got my diabetes under control and I've lost weight too."

Jason McCullen, an IT consultant and father of two, has gone from 19 stone 2 to 15 stone 13 in just five months, and from having an HbAIc blood sugar reading of over 9.6 (not very healthy at all) to just over 6 ( a much healthier reading). He has achieved this with EndoBarrier, a brand new treatment for weight loss and also for getting diabetes under control.

“My weight crept up over the years, but wasn’t helped by a serious spinal injury. The back issue left me in pain and I’m less mobile, and I think this really pushed me over the edge as far as my weight is concerned and lead to me developing Type 2 diabetes.”

Jason was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes, usually associated with weight or age, nearly 2 years ago. He was able to manage it initially, but his blood sugar levels quickly got dangerously out of control. The risk of uncontrolled diabetes can lead to many health complications.

His sister spotted information about the new EndoBarrier procedure for tackling diabetes and weight loss. The EndoBarrier is a non-surgical therapeutic device that is placed in the GI tract endoscopically (via the mouth) to create a barrier between food and the wall of the intestine. The EndoBarrier remains positioned in the GI tract for a period of up to 12 months until it is removed, again through the mouth, during which time the patient will have experienced improvements to their diabetes and weight, often removing the need for pharmaceutical intervention to manage their condition.

“I though this sounds perfect for me and got in touch with the National Obesity Surgery Centre. I was given some nutritional advice before the procedure and now have weekly conversations with the support team, which have really helped me achieve success. The actual procedure to insert the device was very simple…I was even out of hospital and home the same day. Initially I didn’t feel hungry, but then started on a liquid diet and mushy food for a few weeks. I then slowly started eating normally, under the guidance of the NOSC team.

“I quickly started to lose weight and my waist over 5 months has gone from 42 inches to 38 inches, and a clothes size from XXL to L. In fact I was aiming to get to 16 stone, but now I’m there, Apart from the great weight loss, my diabetes is also now under control and my doctors are very pleased. It’s a great relief to start getting my life back and my friends and family have been really impressed with the changes they’ve seen in me.”
