Mr Smith is a Consultant General Surgeon and Honorary Clinical Lecturer at Glasgow University. He originally trained as a vascular surgeon and developed an interest in laser palliation of upper and lower GI tumours. He then trained in laparoscopic surgery and was the first surgeon in the West of Scotland to perform a laparoscopic cholecystectomy. He performed his first obesity surgery operation in 1986.
Mr Smith is a Member of the West of Scotland Surgical Association and a Member of the Association of Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland. He is also a Member of The British Medical Laser Association and an Examiner in final FRCS for the Intercollegiate Board of UK and Ireland. He is a Consultant Assessor of Examiners in final FRCS.
